Back to School Survival: Productivity Tips That Actually Work

DAFer0pX1R4

If you feel like the back-to-school season hits like a freight train, you're not wrong. Between supply lists, lunchboxes, new routines, and wrangling little humans out of bed before sunrise—this time of year is lowkey chaos. And if you’ve ever found yourself Googling “how to survive back to school without losing your mind,” welcome. You’re in the right place.

Back-to-school doesn’t have to wreck your sanity. With a few tweaks (and a couple mom-tested systems), you can go from barely surviving to kinda thriving—even if you’re a Type B mom who hates planners. Let’s break down the productivity tips that actually work when life gets busy.

Why Back-to-School Is Secretly One of the Most Chaotic Times for Moms

No one talks enough about the mental load moms carry when school starts again. You’re managing:

  • Paperwork
  • Bedtime changes
  • First-day jitters (yours and theirs)
  • Logistics, carpools, sign-ups, lunch packing, and about 472 other things
And unlike summer, there's a deadline. August 26th (or whatever your school’s version of D-Day is) doesn’t care if you're emotionally ready. That pressure adds to the chaos, especially if your routines have gone completely rogue over summer break.

5 Things You Can Do Now to Make Mornings Smoother

Here’s the deal: You don’t need a 20-step Pinterest-worthy routine. You need simple wins that work with your real life. These 5 steps are your starting point:

1. Set Up a Family Command Center

This doesn’t have to be fancy. A corner in your kitchen with:
  • A weekly calendar
  • A folder for school papers
  • A whiteboard for reminders
  • A bin for shoes or backpacks
The goal? Reduce the “Where’s my stuff?!” panic that hits every school morning.

Pro Tip: Put a dry erase marker next to the calendar. Let your kids write down field trips or spirit days so it’s not all on you.

2. Reboot the Bedtime Routine

Start shifting bedtime now, not the night before school starts. Move it 15–30 minutes earlier every few days.
And yes, you need a bedtime routine too, mama. Shut down your scroll session earlier, dim the lights, and prep for tomorrow (clothes, lunches, your coffee). You’ll thank yourself in the morning.

3. Create a “Night Before School” Checklist

This is your back-to-school Bible. Include things like:
  • Lay out outfits
  • Pack lunches
  • Fill water bottles
  • Double check homework
  • Sign any forms
  • Charge tablets
You can reuse this checklist every night during the school year and stop the chaos before it starts.

4. Start Your Own Morning Routine—Even If It’s Only 5 Minutes

You don’t need to wake up at 5am and meditate for 45 minutes. If your house is chaos by 7:30, a 5-minute head start can change your entire day.

Try this tomorrow:
  • Wake up 10 minutes before your kids
  • Chug water or coffee
  • Do one thing for you (read, pray, journal, stretch, breathe)
That’s it. One tiny win before the circus begins.

5. Automate What You Can

The fewer decisions you make in the morning, the better:
  • Use the same lunch rotation weekly
  • Pick outfits on Sunday
  • Use alarms or reminders on your phone
  • Have kids use visual checklists to get ready
Don’t rely on your memory. Set systems and let your brain breathe.

You’re Not Behind—You’re Just Overloaded

Back-to-school season will always be a little messy. But it doesn’t have to break you. Start with one small system (like the command center), layer in a bedtime reboot, and give yourself permission to do it imperfectly.

The goal isn’t to be perfect. It’s to make mornings feel less like a fire drill and more like a routine you can actually live with.

ABOUT ME

So who is this Productivity Diva?

Hey, Hey! I'm DaVette! I'm a Mom Life Productivity Coach, a wife, a mom of 3, and I am absolutely obsessed with  TikTok dances. 😂💃🏾

After 6 years working as a Health and Wellness Coach, I realized that most wellness coaches will tell their clients WHAT to do to get healthy, but not HOW! So with that experience and working through my 3rd postpartum journey dealing with EXTREME Mom brain, Productive as a Mother was born!

I help Moms who are struggling with Mom Brain learn the tools they need to relieve the Mom Brain symptoms. With these tools, Moms will also learn how to create habits that allow them the time freedom they've been missing their families or just much needed time for themselves. My clients use that extra time to get healthy or to start their dream business/side hustle so they can live a life with less stress and overwhelm while still having a clean house.

My planners, journals and courses are a combination of what I've learned dealing with my own struggles and through the personal development books, courses, and coaching I've purchased along the way.. I created these tools for myself but then quickly realized that my methods could also help other Moms feel less like a Hot Mess and more like a Mom Maven! Now you will learn from my trials and errors and accomplishments in one place with the support you need to keep it going. I look forward to helping you create the productive life that you deserve!
