The Surprising Habit That Will Boost Your Productivity as a Mom

Most productivity advice tells moms to:
  • Wake up earlier
  • Create a morning routine
  • Time block your day
  • Use a planner
And while those things can absolutely help...
The habit that made the biggest difference in my productivity wasn't any of those things.
It was a simple 10-minute reset.
In fact, this 10-minute habit made me more productive than any planner ever did.

Why I Started Doing a 10-Minute Reset

I don't know about you, but my house used to look like a tornado hit it after school drop-off.
I have three kids.
Between:
  • making lunches
  • doing hair
  • finding missing shoes
  • signing papers
  • getting everyone out the door
the house was completely destroyed by the time I got home.

Around that same time, I had just become a stay-at-home mom again and was trying to figure out what my new routine would look like.

I kept sitting down to work.
I had goals.
I had a planner.
I had things I wanted to accomplish.

But I couldn't focus.
My brain felt scattered.

And then I realized something.
I couldn't mentally move forward until the morning mess was gone.

The Real Reason This Habit Works

At first, I thought I was just being distracted by clutter.
But it was actually something bigger.

It was decision fatigue.

When I walked into a messy kitchen...
A pile of laundry...
A dining room table covered in stuff...

My brain immediately started thinking:
  • I should clean that.
  • I need to put that away.
  • Don't forget to wash that.
  • I should organize that later.
Suddenly my brain was juggling twenty extra tasks before I had even started my day.

No wonder I couldn't focus.
No wonder I kept procrastinating.
No wonder I felt overwhelmed.

The 10-Minute Reset That Changed Everything

 10 minute timer

So I created a simple routine.
As soon as I got home from drop-off, I spent 10 minutes resetting the house.

Not deep cleaning.
Not scrubbing.
Not organizing.
Just resetting.

I would:
  • Make the bed
  • Pick up clothes off the floor
  • Clean up the kitchen
  • Straighten the dining room
  • Do a quick bathroom pickup
That's it.
After those 10 minutes, I could finally focus on what I had planned for the day.

The Surprising Thing I Just Realized

As I was writing this blog post, I had a realization.
I got away from this routine recently.

And honestly?

I haven't been nearly as productive.
That little habit was doing way more heavy lifting than I gave it credit for.

It wasn't just cleaning.
It was creating mental clarity.

Why This Works So Well for Moms

Moms deal with constant mental load.

We're always thinking about:
  • appointments
  • meals
  • school events
  • laundry
  • sports
  • bills
  • work
  • the house
Add visual clutter to that list and it's like opening ten more tabs in your brain.

Research has shown that clutter can increase stress and make it harder to focus. The more visual distractions we have, the harder our brains have to work to process them.

When you do a quick reset, you're reducing some of that mental noise.
And when your brain is calmer, productivity becomes easier.

The Mistake Most Moms Make

Most moms leave the mess for later.
I used to do this too.

I'd tell myself: "I'll clean tonight."
But then evening would come.

And instead of having a relaxing night routine...
I'd have a complete house overhaul waiting for me.
That made me not want to do anything.

Then I would wake up the next morning to a messy house.
Which made me feel overwhelmed before the day even started.
And the cycle continued.

How to Start Your Own 10-Minute Reset

chalkboard that says how do I start?
This doesn't need to be complicated.
In fact, the simpler it is, the better.

Set a timer for 10 minutes.
Then pick up whatever is out of place.
That's it.

No organizing projects.
No cleaning supplies.
No perfection.
Just reset.

My Exact Reset Routine

When I do my reset, I:
  1. Turn on a podcast
  2. Start in the kitchen
  3. Move into the dining room
  4. Do a quick floor pickup in the kids' rooms
  5. End in my bedroom by making the bed
It's basically power cleaning without thinking.

You just move.
No decisions.
No overthinking.
Just action.

"That Seems Too Simple"

If you're thinking: "There's no way that could make a difference."

You're probably right.
It is simple.
Which is exactly why it works.

Because there is no excuse not to do it.

You don't need:
  • an hour
  • motivation
  • special tools
  • perfect circumstances
You just need 10 minutes.

The Real Benefit Isn't a Cleaner House

The biggest benefit isn't actually the cleaning.
It's how you feel afterward.

You feel:
  • more in control
  • less overwhelmed
  • more clear-headed
  • more focused
  • more patient
And that mental clarity follows you through the rest of your day.

Try It Tomorrow

Before you start scrolling.
Before you start working.
Before you start tackling your to-do list.
Set a timer for 10 minutes.
Reset your space.
Then see how much easier it is to reset your mind.

ABOUT ME

So who is this Productivity Diva?

Hey hey, I’m DaVette 🤍—mom of 3, wife, and a former hot mess express who could not stick to a routine to save her life. I tried everything—planners, apps, waking up earlier—and nothing stuck. My brain felt like 47 tabs open, I was constantly overwhelmed, and I was snapping way more than I wanted to. Honestly, I started to believe I just wasn’t the kind of mom who could “have it together.”

After 6+ years as a health and wellness coach (and deep in my own postpartum mom brain era), I realized something huge: everyone tells moms what to do—but no one shows us how to make it work in real life… with kids, chaos, and zero uninterrupted time. So I stopped trying to force systems that weren’t built for me and created one that actually worked with my mom brain.

Now, I help moms do the same—build simple habits that stick, create time for themselves, and feel calmer, more present, and in control (without becoming a type A robot). Everything inside my courses, planners, and tools comes from what I needed when I was in survival mode—so you can stop feeling like a hot mess and start feeling like the mom you know you can be.
